The Coast of Rua do Comandante João Belo, Fai Chi Kei
Construction of Waterfront Leisure Area with Box Culvert Drains (Phase 1)
2023 - 2024
To alleviate flooding in Fai Chi Kei and Lam Mao Distructs caused by heavy rains and to improve overall drainage capacity across districts, the North Bay Pumping Station and Box Culverts Project will be implemented in three phases.
The first phase involves constructing a box culvert drain of appox. 170m long to support the pumping station in phase three. Working together the new built culvert will collect rainwater through the box culverts, divert to the pumping station for discharge into the sea during storms. Upon completion, it will further connect to the existing stormwater culverts in Lam Mao District, complementing the surrounding network to reduce flooding risks across districts.
The project expands the existing coastal pedestrian zone to create a high-quality waterfront leisure corridor for the neighbourhood, offering more diverse outdoor activity spaces covering approximately 2,166 square metres. The area integrates a variety of facilities including sunshade structures, fitness zones, children's interactive areas, viewing platforms, and connects seamlessly with the existing North Bay Recreation Areato provide residents with improved and accessible outdoor recreational space. In addition, the project uses carefully arranged planters and trees to establish a green buffer that separates seating areas from adjacent roadways. This design not only enhances the comfort and safety of the public space but also fully complies with the flood protection wall design requirements specified by the governemnt authorities.
